Shutter Speed

My THIRD beginning photography class is underway. I'm taking this particular 6-week course with hope that something the instructor says will make things "click" for me. I want to know how to dial up my camera under ALL conditions, and I want it to be instinctual. I don't want to rely on the AUTO mode. This week, the lesson is on shutter speed. Cal and I headed down to Canal Park this (cloudy) morning and this was my favorite shot. I think if I'd had the tripod, and maybe tweaked the ISO a bit, it would have been perfect!
