Back to the Grind

School is back in session for this 8th grader...and as you can see, Calvin already has homework! He had assignments tonight in Honors Geometry and Latin. The nice thing is, he's able to do it at the kitchen counter! Yes, the countertops went in today! It's going to be so nice to be able to eat, do homework...simply gather, IN THE KITCHEN. The tile backsplash goes in tomorrow, and the appliances will come Wednesday, so you can expect the full reveal by the end of the week!

Pebbles

This is Pebbles. This sweet dog belongs to my friend Julie. Pebbles, Julie and I joined Alane for an overnight at her cabin yesterday afternoon. We had a wonderful time...great food, conversation, and yes, we all managed to get a few pages done for our scrapbooks! But not this morning. This morning, we sat out on the dock. What a beautiful morning!

We May Be Crazy

Since our kitchen project slowed down for a week due to the countertop issues...we decided to go ahead and gut the bathroom on the third floor.
The contractors are having lots of fun with the angles in here...only one minor head injury...no stitches required. I bring this up, because the lead guy is here today. Yes, on a Saturday!

Framed

Last week, during our visit to Madison & Milwaukee, I brought Calvin to The Exclusive Company on State Street in Madison. He paged through all of the albums not sure what he was looking for. But when he found this, he knew it was coming home with him. It's King Crimson's "In the Wake of Poseidon". He also found the CD so he bought that too. That way he could actually listen to the music. An interesting fact about this album? It was first released in 1970!
Today we found the frame for the album at Michael's, so it's going up on Calvin's wall as soon as I post this on the blog!

Target Practice

This was fun for both boys until the bees and wasps showed up!

Home Baked

We still don't have a sink or a stove...but we've got our Advantium! It got a full workout tonight, making pizza for Mason, chicken for Calvin, and cookies for us all!
Sounds like we'll have all our appliances in by next Tuesday (the delay due to countertop issues that have now been solved). I never thought I'd be so eager to cook a real meal at home!
I'm sure that feeling will pass.

Simon Happy to Be Home

When we travel anyplace other than the cabin, we usually take Simon to the nearby boarding kennel. We always hear how much he likes it there, how he plays so nicely with the other dogs (especially the girls), and how he loves to swim in the pond. But Simon has been there quite a bit this summer. Not only for our week-long vacation last week, but I've been taking him to "doggie daycare" so he doesn't have to deal with the contractors coming in and out of the kitchen every day (he has a few issues with contractors).
Even though we had workers in the house today, it just didn't seem right to bring him in so soon for daycare. So he stayed home today.  He sure is a happy dog!

Goodbye for now, Wisconsin Farmland

*photo taken from the car window this afternoon at about 65 mph
I'm not sure why I feel the need to say goodbye, because we're in Wisconsin all the time. It's just a ten-minute ride across a bridge to get there. But to me, THIS photo is what Wisconsin is all about. Farm after farm, green field after green field. When we head to our Michigan cabin, across Northern Wisconsin, it just doesn't have the same feel as Central and Southern Wisconsin. So goodbye for now, Wisconsin Farmland! We had a great vacation and hope to see you again real soon!

My New Ride

Yes, friends and family, this is my new bike. (gasps heard round the world)
Paul bought a new Cannondale mountain bike while in Madison the other day, and when we stopped to pick it up today, we took a look at the latest Kim-friendly style, a flat-foot cruiser. It looks like a beach bike, doesn't it? She's an Electra Townie...and she needs a name. Paul is thinking "Carmen" (get it, Carmen Electra?). Cal & Mason like the name Kermit because of her pretty green color.
It's not easy being green.
Any name suggestions?

Yesterday Afternoon

Sorry to leave you hanging yesterday...we had a very busy afternoon and evening. After our Sprecher tour, we went to the home of Daryl Stuermer. Daryl is an incredible guitar/bass player, and in fact, plays with Phil Collins and Genesis when he's not making terrific sounds on his own. He happens to be good friend of Paul's Uncle Jim, which is how we hooked up. (thanks Uncle Jim!) We spent about an hour there, seeing his home studio and guitars plus we listened to him play songs from his latest album. What great fun for Calvin to hook up with one of the best players in the world!
After that, Calvin and I were off to the Progressive Nation 2009 concert. I thought I'd be one of the oldest people there, but no, the age range (seriously) was about eight to eighty (I'm not kidding, there was a guy there who had to be 80-I think he took out his hearing aids, though).
I loved being able to take Calvin to the show, but I was definitely out of my element!
Cal's favorite song to play is Dream Theater's A Rite of Passage. It was the second song they played, but he wouldn't let me leave the concert until the very end.

Sprecher Tour

We've made our way to Milwaukee. We've got a big night ahead, but for now, I'll post a couple of pictures from the Sprecher Brewery Tour. We sampled eight different beers and the boys tried Sprecher Root Beer, Ginger Ale, Puma Cola and Ravin' Red sodas.
I'm just not sure we'll be back by midnight so you might not see what we're up to until tomorrow. Thanks for checking in!

"Today Was A Good Day"

Today's title is a direct quote from Calvin. You see, today was Calvin's 13th birthday. He's been planning the agenda for this day for months. He knew we'd be in Madison, and had planned out his breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a few stops at music and guitar stores. But he didn't plan on stopping at the Mount Horeb Mustard Museum and wasn't planning on buying mustard out of a vending machine (the only place in the world where you can do that)! I was hoping this stop wouldn't be too disappointing for him.
Turns out, he loved it! We haven't been to the museum since we lived in Madison in the mid 1990's...and boy has this place changed! There are more than five thousand varieties of mustard from all over the world, and many of them are available to sample. I think Paul bought six or seven varieties today, and Calvin got a shirt from "Poupon U". What is better than that when you're 13?
How about stalagmites and stalactites?
We also visited Cave of the Mounds...just down the road from the Mustard Museum. It's an amazing place, this picture just doesn't do it justice. Click here for more information on our tour.
Finally, dinner at PF Changs, with The Great Wall of Chocolate for dessert. It's a six layer slab of chocolate cake. Cal finished about 2/3 of it on his own.
Yes, today was a good day. Happy Birthday Calvin! We love you!

Madison at Night

We spent most of the day shopping, but we hit some of our favorite spots tonight! We walked around the UW Campus, checking out the new construction. We also spent time at the Memorial Union. Paul showed us where he had his first beer in the Rathskeller, and the boys had a little Babcock Ice Cream with Bucky. It feels like coming home.

International Crane Foundation

On our way to Madison, we stopped at the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin. We've driven by the Foundation for years and have never stopped, and we're so glad we finally did! We spent a couple of hours touring the grounds. There are 15 species of cranes in the world, and the ICF is the only place in the world that has them all available to see! We saw 13 of the 15, as two types of cranes were hiding from view.
I took 130 pictures today, and learned that I still have a lot to learn about how to deal with different lighting situations, and FOCUS.

A Room With a View

We're on the road again! Tune in tomorrow for Day One of our Wisconsin vacation.

Hibiscus as Big as Your Head

We drove to St. Cloud and back today for "approval to cut" the granite countertops. All is fine, and things will proceed (whew!). We had lunch with my parents at (where else?) Five Guys, and then stopped at Munsinger gardens for a few minutes. Check out the plate-sized Hibiscus!

Peas & Beans

Our neighbor, Kay, has a vegetable garden growing in her backyard, so I brought my camera over to take a few pictures.  She shared a bucket of beans and peas with us, but I'm pretty sure the peas didn't even make it back home...we ate them all while we were over there. Even Calvin had a pea pod!
We're hoping for some success with beans in the microwave tonight, as that is our only appliance.
It looks like Kay has an abundance of potatoes growing. I can't wait to see what they look like when they're ready!

Glensheen Mansion

I went to Glensheen Mansion for the first time this afternoon. This is one of those sites that, because I live here, I just assume I'll see "someday".  Today I was able to walk the grounds and gardens of the Mansion while visiting the Festival of Fine Art and Craft, an annual event that I've managed to miss for one reason or another every year.

Now that I've seen the grounds, I'm more motivated to make time to do the full mansion tour. This home has such an interesting history, including the murder of two people back in 1977 (though I hear that is not really discussed during the tour). You can read a bit about the murders here.
Before we even moved to Duluth, I read this book about the murders, which was very interesting to me, as it's done from the perspective of a journalist covering the case. That journalist, Joe Kimball, wrote an "update" article last year about the case which you can find here.

If you do plan a trip to Duluth for the Mansion tour and you hope to see the gardens, I'd suggest doing it in July, as the gardens were really past their prime today.

The Home Stretch

Here's an update on the kitchen remodel. Our tile floor went in on Monday & Tuesday, and it was grouted on Wednesday. The floor looks fabulous, but since it's covered, you'll have to wait for the "after" photo to see what it looks like!
The wall oven went in on Thursday, the rest of the appliances will go in early next week.
Right now we are "on hold" for a bit, due to a countertop problem. Apparently, the granite fabricators are having trouble matching a seam (which, unfortunately, has to go in a pretty prominent place). They want me to drive to their shop (3 hours away) to see the granite in person and decide whether the look of this seam is something I can live with (nothing has been cut yet, they do it all digitally, first). If so, things will proceed. If not, I will likely have to drive back again next week to choose another slab that is set to arrive on the 24th.
One little blip...but really, everything else has been so quick and easy, it's hard to complain.

My Other Job

No...it's not cleaning bathrooms.
In addition to my own remodeling project, I have been documenting the remodeling project at Calvin's school. Today, I had the chance to see the completed Boys' Locker Room/Shower Room/Bathroom project. In the course of doing this project this summer, I volunteered for another project (of course, that's what I do), and I will be writing a parent blog that will appear on the school website. I'll have full access to the school and will hopefully capture some "behind the scenes" activities that the students are working on, as well as act as a liaison between parents and school faculty/staff. I've heard lots of favorable comments from teachers, and am hoping for a similar reaction from parents. We're hoping to launch the blog sometime next week!

Fast Food...Again

The kitchen renovation is coming along...but we're still in fast-food mode here.
At least we're able to eat outside! We've had some wonderful weather this week. It almost makes up for the cool summer through June & July. Almost.
I'm told my appliances could go in as soon as Friday...I'll post an update photo later in the week.

Sailboat Surprise

Our friends from Marshfield left this evening, but not without a big farewell to Duluth. This is the sailboat they chartered for the afternoon. I was unable to go along, but took shots while they were sailing around the harbor on their way back from their trip.
Calvin & Mason did go along for the sail today. I gave each of them a camera and told them to shoot pictures of whatever they wanted.
I love the suspense...not knowing what I would find when I uploaded the pictures to the computer.
Imagine my surprise when I found a shot of Calvin on the camera he took on the trip. Calvin handed the camera to Graeme's sister Taylor when he was steering the boat and she got this shot of him behind the wheel.
And Mason handed his camera to Graeme's sister Ali, who took this one.
I'm not sure what I expected to find when I looked at the pictures...I just know I didn't expect pictures of my kids. After all, I'm never in the shots when I have the camera.
What a fun surprise to see them on their adventure!
By the way, they both took some fabulous pictures. I think we'll have to put together an album from their day!

Goofin' Around

We've enjoyed being tourists in our own town today, showing our friends the city. These two (Graeme's sisters) used to babysit for Mason & Calvin back in Marshfield. We're sad they're leaving town tomorrow, but we're hoping they've had some fun and will come back soon!

Friends

This is Calvin with his best friend Graeme. They always have fun together. It doesn't really matter what they do.
Graeme & his family are visiting from Marshfield, Wisconsin, the city we left four years ago. We headed to Canal Park today for some sight-seeing and rock-skipping, then back home for some fierce competition on the Wii.
This is one of those friendships that will stand the test of time. I see so many similarities to my friendship with Kim. She and I only lived in the same city for four years. We're still friends today, 36 years later!

Hydrangeas Alive & Well

I have three hydrangea plants alongside my house. I pruned them back pretty severely last fall, and back in June I was going to dig them up and throw them out. There were absolutely no signs of life...just a bunch of sticks. Well, I got busy, didn't need the extra garden labor, so I left them alone. Today there are two blooms on one of the plants, and the other two have plenty of green leaves on them! I think I'll point my pruning shears elsewhere this fall.
*I used this shot for my class on "Focus". I focused on the water droplets on the upper third part of the leaf.

All-Consuming

My apologies for the two-in-a-row nature of this post. I didn't have time to take any pictures today, other than three in my kitchen. Crooked walls slowed things down a bit today, but we (who am I kidding, my contractors) were still able to get all the cabinets in place. Hoping for more interesting posts in the next couple of days!

Kitchen Update

So, back on July 21st, our family started another construction project. (You can find that post here.)
Paul and I do enjoy a good construction project, and this one, has been great. I feel like things are moving at a rapid pace, and the quality has been beyond my expectations. This morning, I even found one of the guys sanding down the newly finished paint job. He said there were a few flaws in the finish and he wanted it to be right so he was going to re-do a few spots. Seriously, these walls looked so much better than every other wall in my house, and he's "fixing" them.
So, the cabinets will all be in place by tomorrow and the countertop guys will come and template (on Saturday!). The tile guy starts the floor on Monday, so it's possible I'll be able to have appliances moved in here by the 17th! (Two weeks earlier than I'd anticipated.)
So yes, we are already planning our next project. We're going to have them do the third floor bathroom next.

Speed Racer

Mason is taking a mountain biking class all this week at the local nature center. The chain of his old bike fell off in the parking lot on the first morning of class, so we fixed it as best we could, then headed to the bike shop that afternoon. He and his new mountain bike are having a great time getting acquainted.
This shot was NOT what I was going for (technically), but an incoming storm meant low light. Even though I didn't get the crisp shot I wanted, I really like the look of this one anyway. To me, it's just right!

Betty's Pies

I took the boys for lunch (and pie) here today, to escape the drywall dust of my kitchen renovation.
This little restaurant is an icon along Minnesota's North Shore. It's located just north of Two Harbors, which is about 20 minutes or so north of Duluth.
Betty's Pies started in 1956 in a fishing shack. It's really an interesting story. If you'd like to read more about the history of Betty's Pies, or if you'd like to order a pie, click here.
(the Five Layer Chocolate is one of my favorites!)

It's Soccer Time

It was just a couple of weeks ago that we finished baseball season.
Now it's time for soccer.
Final score tonight 4-0. Mason's team had the zero. But he's happy with how he played, and is excited that his coach plans to play him at the center or right forward position.

Good Morning

Calvin joined me at the dock this morning for my daily "loon watch" but the loon wasn't out today. Not sure why. It was, by far, the best morning of the week!

Pitcher Plant Flower

This is what the flower from a pitcher plant looks like. This is one of just a few left standing from last season. I know I've taken similar pictures of this very flower before, but I'm not sure if they've made the blog.
Lots of rain at the cabin today. Paul and the boys had hoped to get out in the boat, but instead spent the day helping cousin Katie put a new roof on her cabin. That project made my kitchen project look tame!
Tomorrow is our last day here...back to real life tomorrow!
*another photo done in full Manual Mode!
